Biography
For over a decade, HC Gilje has been exploring a central theme that runs through a diverse range of projects, called Conversations with Spaces. This concept investigates the transformation of spaces through light, projection, sound, and motion—ephemeral mediums that temporarily alter physical environments and shape our experience of them. At the heart of this work is an ongoing inquiry into how we navigate the world through our bodies, how we situate ourselves within time, and how our relationships to others, our surroundings, and technology intertwine to form our understanding of these spaces.
Gilje’s interest lies in the movement that flows through spaces, objects, bodies, and landscapes. He is drawn to the interaction between light and physical structures, noting how light becomes visible only through its effects on materials—whether through reflection, refraction, or shadow.
The movement of light within a space subtly influences our perception of time. Central to his practice is a deep engagement with improvisation, whether through the lens of a camera, in live performance, in the creation of experimental video, or within spatial installations.
To facilitate this exploration, Gilje develops tools and devices that function as instruments, mediators, probes, or interfaces. These objects become the means through which he interacts with and converses with his environment, enabling a dynamic relationship between the artist and the spaces he transforms.
